During the 44th German hospital conference held 15 Nov 2021, experts from the DKG (German Hospital Federation), InEK (Institut für das Entgeltsystem im Krankenhaus – Institute for the hospital remuneration system), GKV-Spitzenverband (Statutory Health Insurance Umbrella Organisation) and health economists discussed current German hospital financing situation and future needs for the German DRG system
Experts agree that a Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) reform is required
It will be interesting to see how the new German government, consisting of three different parties with different agendas, will tackle such a reform
The main reform areas are expected to be centred around:
o Outpatient care in hospitals
o Nursing care financing (Pflegefinanzierung) in hospitals
o Advance financing (Vorhaltefinanzierung)
While a DRG reform is likely to be kicked off, IVDs still do not seem to be at the centre of the debate in the short run
